Our Doctors and Services

  Dr. John Michael Barsanti graduated with distinction from the University of Virginia. He subsequently obtained his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia. After an internship at Riverside Regional Medical Center, he then completed his residency in Anesthesia at the Medical College of Virginia. Dr. Barsanti was the first to complete a sub-specialty fellowship in Pain Management at MCV and then remained at the Medical College as an Assistant Professor. While at MCV, Dr. Barsanti served as the director of the Cancer Pain Clinic, and Co-Director of the Pain Management Center at MCV. He was involved in numerous studies and co-authored several research papers.

Dr. Barsanti, now in private practice, continues to be a leader in the pain management community and has lectured extensively

throughout the country. He currently serves on the MedicareCarrier Advisory Committee, representing interventional pain management. He also is serving as a committee member for the Board of Medicine Prescription Monitoring Program.

Dr. Barsanti has been recognized nationally by the Consumer Research Council as "America's Top Physician" in Anesthesiology and Pain Management. Richmond Magazine has also recognized him yearly, since 2000, as a "Top Doc" in Pain Management specialty.

 
  Dr. Stephen P. Long is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Randolph-Macon College and of Virginia Commonwealth University's School of Medicine where he completed two years of surgical residency followed by an anesthesiology residency at the Medical College of Virginia Hospitals. He subsequently completed specialty training and board certification in Pain Medicine and remained on faculty as co-director of the VCU Pain Management Center from 1991 until 1998. He is an Associate Clinical Professor of anesthesiology at VCU where he still actively teaches 2nd and 4th year medical students.

Most recently Dr. Long has served on the boards of the VCU Health System and the American Society of Anesthesiologists. Dr. Long has lectured extensitvely throughout the world on topics

pertaining to acute, chronic and cancer pain as well as legal and regulatory issues involving pain management. Additionally, Dr. Long has multiple publications concerning areas of pain management.

His training and experience have enabled him to provide very accurate medical diagnosis and treatment to the patient. For this he has recieved numerous accolades including Richmond Magazine's bi-annual, "Top-Doc" in Pain Medicine Award, 2002, 2004, 2006, and 2008. As well as Who's Who in Health Care and the Consumer Research Council of America to Top Physicians Award. He is an examiner of the American Board of Anesthesiology in Pain Medicine and is Boarded by the American Board of Anesthesiology and holds a Subspecialty certificate in Pain Management by the American Board of Anesthesiology.

 
  Renee Hammel, FNP
Renee earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2004. She then served in the Peace Corps as a Community Health Educator. In 2008 she returned to school to pursue her passion for medicine. She enrolled in John Hopkins University’s second degree program with the School of Nursing, earning both a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in Nursing. She is now licensed as a Family Nurse Practitioner in the state of Virginia.

Renee was the 2009 recipient of The Sinai Nurses’ Alumnae Association of Sinai Hospital, Inc. Award as well as being the John Hopkins Peace Corps Fellows scholar in 2008. She brings to Commonwealth Pain Specialists a wealth of education and solid clinical care experience.

Renee enjoys treating and caring for her patients and also spends some of her free time giving back to the community as a volunteer Nurse Practitioner at CrossOver Health Ministries.

Renee will provide assistance in meeting your needs by providing excellent follow-up or maintenance care when your doctor feels it is appropriate. She works in close contact with your physician.
